Why Hyderabad Is Particularly Challenging for Asthma Patients
Hyderabad's combination of rapid urbanisation, year-round construction activity, seasonal heat, and monsoon humidity creates an environment that significantly worsens asthma for many patients. Understanding which local triggers affect you — and when — is essential for managing your condition effectively.
Construction Dust and Particulate Matter
Hyderabad is one of the fastest-growing cities in India, with construction activity in virtually every neighbourhood. Construction generates fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), silica dust, and cement particles. These ultrafine particles penetrate deep into the airways, triggering inflammation in sensitised lungs. Areas like HiTech City, Gachibowli, Narsingi, and Kokapet — with heavy ongoing infrastructure development — record consistently high PM2.5 levels.
Practical steps: Check the daily AQI on apps like IQAir or Sameer (CPCB). On days above AQI 100, limit outdoor time, especially morning walks. Use an N95 mask (not a surgical mask) outdoors on high-pollution days.
Monsoon Humidity and Mould
Hyderabad's monsoon season (June–September) brings high humidity — often above 85%. Humidity promotes mould and fungal spore growth, particularly in poorly ventilated homes. Mould spores are potent asthma triggers. Patients who are relatively stable in winter often experience significant worsening during and immediately after the monsoon.
Practical steps: Use a dehumidifier if indoor humidity exceeds 60%. Check walls, ceilings, and bathroom tiles for mould growth. Keep windows closed during peak humidity hours. Consider an air purifier with HEPA filter in the bedroom.
House Dust Mites
House dust mites thrive in Hyderabad's warm, humid climate year-round. They live in mattresses, pillows, sofas, and carpets — feeding on shed human skin cells. Their faeces particles are a major allergen. Patients with dust mite allergy typically wake with congestion, and symptoms are worse after making beds or vacuuming.
Practical steps: Use allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers. Wash bedding weekly in hot water (above 60°C). Remove heavy curtains and carpets if possible. Vacuum with a HEPA filter.
Vehicle Exhaust and Traffic Pollution
Hyderabad's traffic density — particularly on the Outer Ring Road, Mehdipatnam, and LB Nagar corridor — generates significant nitrogen dioxide and ozone exposure. Ozone is a particularly potent airway irritant and peaks in summer afternoons. Exercise outdoors in the morning, not the afternoon.
Seasonal Pollen
Hyderabad has significant pollen counts from February to May (pre-monsoon flowering season). Parthenium hysterophorus (congress grass) — a widespread weed — is a major allergen in Hyderabad specifically. Patients with allergic asthma often notice a clear seasonal pattern coinciding with this period.
When to Seek Medical Review
If you notice your reliever inhaler use increasing during any of these seasonal periods — or if you have a persistent cough, or if your sleep is disrupted by cough and wheeze more than twice per week — book a review. Your preventer dose may need temporary adjustment for the season. Do not wait for a severe episode.
