Insurance Coverage for Sleep Studies

In-lab polysomnography (PSG) and CPAP titration are covered by most group health insurance plans and government schemes when the correct ICD-10 codes are submitted with proper clinical documentation. The key codes are G47.33 (obstructive sleep apnea, adult) and Z13.89 (encounter for screening).

Home sleep tests and DISE have variable coverage. Many corporate group policies include them; many individual plans do not. CPAP machines are classified as durable medical equipment and reimbursement varies significantly by insurer.

Our advice:Read your policy's sleep medicine and durable medical equipment (DME) clauses before the study, not after. We prepare itemised bills, ICD-10 coded invoices, and clinical summaries in the format most insurers require.

  • Bring your insurance card and policy document to the first consultation
  • We confirm coverage eligibility and code requirements before proceeding
  • Itemised bills and clinical summaries issued on request
  • Most CGHS and government employees receive coverage for PSG

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a sleep study cost in Hyderabad?

A home sleep apnea test (HSAT) costs approximately ₹2,400 to ₹5,000. In-lab polysomnography (PSG) typically ranges from ₹6,500 to ₹12,000 depending on the facility. DISE (drug-induced sleep endoscopy) is a separate day-care procedure with its own charge. Respire provides an itemised estimate at the first consultation.

Is a home sleep test accurate enough to diagnose sleep apnea?

For most patients with a high pre-test probability of obstructive sleep apnea and no significant comorbidities, a home sleep test is accurate enough to confirm the diagnosis and initiate treatment. In-lab polysomnography is preferred when the home test is negative or inconclusive, when central apnea or a parasomnia is suspected, or when the patient has significant cardiac or respiratory disease.

Does insurance cover sleep studies in India?

In-lab polysomnography and CPAP titration studies are covered by most group health insurance plans and government schemes when properly coded with the appropriate ICD-10 diagnostic codes. Home sleep tests and DISE have variable coverage. CPAP machines are classified as durable medical equipment and coverage varies by insurer. Respire provides the documentation (ICD-10 codes, itemised bills, clinical summary) needed to submit a claim.

What is the difference between a home sleep test and in-lab polysomnography?

A home sleep test records 4 to 6 channels: airflow, oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiratory effort, and body position. It is performed in your own bed. Polysomnography records 20 or more channels including EEG (brain waves), EMG (muscle activity), EOG (eye movements), and detailed respiratory data, scored by a certified technologist in a sleep lab. PSG is more detailed but more expensive. For straightforward OSA, home testing is usually sufficient.

What is a DISE and why is it priced separately?

Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) is not a diagnostic sleep study for sleep apnea severity. It is a separate procedure performed under light sedation in which an ENT surgeon passes a flexible endoscope to observe the airway collapsing in real time, identifying the exact site of obstruction. This determines which surgical procedure (if any) is appropriate. Because it requires an endoscopy room, sedation, and ENT specialist time, it is billed as a day-care procedure, not a sleep diagnostic.

Do I need a referral for a sleep study at Respire?

No. You can call directly to book a sleep medicine consultation at our Basheer Bagh or Jubilee Hills clinic. At the consultation, Dr. Pradyut Waghray will assess your symptoms, determine which study is appropriate, and arrange it. Most patients take a home sleep study kit home the same day or have an in-lab study booked within the week.
