EBUS Cost in Hyderabad: What to Expect and How to Plan

The question we hear before almost any other is this: what is this going to cost?

Patients referred for EBUS in Hyderabad often arrive with no pricing information at all. Here it is: EBUS in Hyderabad costs roughly ₹18,000 to ₹45,000, depending primarily on the type of procedure your doctor has ordered. That range is wide, but it is not random. Five specific factors account for most of it.

How Much Does EBUS Cost in Hyderabad?

A national survey of EBUS practitioners across India (PMC, 2022) recorded a median procedure cost of ₹20,000 for EBUS-TBNA. Private multi-specialty hospitals in Hyderabad typically quote higher, in the ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 range.

Procedure typeApproximate cost range (Hyderabad)
CP-EBUS (convex probe, mediastinal staging)₹20,000 to ₹35,000
RP-EBUS (radial probe, peripheral lesion)₹18,000 to ₹28,000
Combined CP-EBUS and RP-EBUS₹30,000 to ₹45,000
ROSE add-on (rapid on-site evaluation)Add ₹3,000 to ₹8,000

These figures are approximate ranges. Your hospital will give you a specific written estimate before the procedure. Ask for it.

What Drives the Cost of EBUS?

01

CP-EBUS vs RP-EBUS

These are different instruments requiring different capital investment and training. CP-EBUS is more widely available across Hyderabad's specialist centres. RP-EBUS uses a separate radial probe for peripheral lesions. If your doctor orders both in the same session, the billing reflects two distinct procedural steps.

02

Number of lymph node stations sampled

In lung cancer staging, sampling two lymph node stations takes less time than sampling five. More stations means a longer procedure. How many stations your doctor needs to sample depends entirely on your imaging and clinical picture, not on anything elective.

03

ROSE availability

ROSE (rapid on-site evaluation) means a cytologist reviews the biopsy specimen in the procedure room while you are still under sedation. Centres offering ROSE charge more upfront. For lung cancer staging cases, the cost of a failed first sample followed by a repeat procedure typically exceeds the ROSE add-on by a wide margin.

04

Sedation type

Most EBUS procedures in India are done under conscious sedation: relaxed, drowsy, not fully asleep, no anaesthesiologist required. When general anaesthesia is clinically necessary, an anaesthesia fee is added, typically ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 more depending on the centre.

05

Hospital tier and infrastructure

A government teaching hospital prices differently from a private multi-specialty centre. At private facilities, infrastructure costs are built into the facility fee: a dedicated bronchoscopy suite, fluoroscopy support, post-procedure recovery space, and the nursing staff to run it.

Why Does EBUS Cost More Than a Standard Bronchoscopy?

A standard flexible bronchoscope costs roughly ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh. An EBUS bronchoscope with its integrated ultrasound transducer costs upward of ₹85 lakh. That capital cost is distributed across every procedure performed on that scope.

Beyond the equipment, EBUS requires an interventional pulmonologist in Hyderabad who has received specific EBUS training. A national EBUS survey (PMC, 2022) found that only 38% of pulmonologists surveyed across India had received formal EBUS training. The skill is concentrated in a small number of specialist centres.

EBUS vs Mediastinoscopy: Which Actually Costs More?

Most patients assume EBUS is the expensive option. The total episode numbers tell a different story.

Mediastinoscopy is the surgical alternative for sampling mediastinal lymph nodes. It requires general anaesthesia, a surgical team, a neck incision, and one to two days as an inpatient. In India, the total episode cost for mediastinoscopy, covering the surgical fee, anaesthesia, inpatient bed, nursing care, wound management, and follow-up, typically runs from ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000.

EBUS is a day procedure. The patient arrives, receives conscious sedation, and goes home the same afternoon. No incision. No inpatient stay. When you count the full episode, EBUS is nearly always less expensive.

Is EBUS Covered by Health Insurance in India?

Yes. EBUS is covered under most major schemes, but the process for claiming varies.

Ayushman Bharat PMJAY

EBUS falls under oncology and diagnostic bronchoscopy packages in the PMJAY benefit list. Coverage applies only at PMJAY-empanelled hospitals. Confirm empanelment before shortlisting facilities.

CGHS and ESI

Central government employees and pensioners under CGHS can claim EBUS as a diagnostic bronchoscopy procedure. A referral letter from your treating physician is required before the procedure. ESI beneficiaries follow a similar process through their ESI-empanelled hospital network.

Private health insurance and TPA

Most private health insurance plans cover EBUS when ordered as a diagnostic or staging procedure. Insurers including Star Health, Bajaj Allianz, HDFC Ergo, and United India have approved EBUS claims under pulmonology and oncology diagnostic codes. Your doctor must document medical necessity in the referral letter.

Three steps to check coverage before your procedure day:

Call the helpline on your insurance card. Ask: "Is diagnostic bronchoscopy with EBUS-TBNA covered under my plan?"

Ask your doctor for a pre-authorisation letter stating the clinical indication.

Submit that letter to the hospital's cashless desk at least 48 hours before the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does EBUS cost in Hyderabad?

In Hyderabad, EBUS costs approximately ₹18,000 to ₹45,000 depending on procedure type. CP-EBUS for mediastinal staging is roughly ₹20,000 to ₹35,000. Combined CP-EBUS and RP-EBUS procedures cost ₹30,000 to ₹45,000. Ask your hospital for a written quote before the procedure.

Is EBUS-TBNA covered by Ayushman Bharat?

Yes, at empanelled hospitals. EBUS-TBNA falls under oncology and diagnostic bronchoscopy packages in the PMJAY list. Confirm that the facility you plan to attend is empanelled before booking.

How much does EBUS cost with insurance in India?

With cashless insurance, your out-of-pocket cost may be zero or limited to a co-payment. CGHS, ESI, and most private TPA plans cover EBUS when medically indicated. The key step is pre-authorisation before the procedure date, not after.

Is EBUS more expensive than a standard bronchoscopy?

Yes. Standard flexible bronchoscopy in Hyderabad typically costs ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. EBUS costs more because the ultrasound bronchoscope is a substantially more expensive piece of equipment, and because the procedure requires an interventional pulmonologist rather than a general pulmonologist.

Can EBUS be done at a government hospital in Hyderabad?

EBUS is available at select government hospitals that have the equipment and a trained specialist. Wait times at government centres tend to be longer. For oncology staging cases where the clinical timeline matters, private centres with dedicated EBUS programmes offer faster access.

How long does the EBUS procedure take?

A standard CP-EBUS procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many lymph node stations are sampled. Combined CP-EBUS and RP-EBUS sessions run up to 90 minutes. Including preparation and post-procedure monitoring, most patients spend two to four hours at the facility in total.
