Cryobiopsy Cost in India: What You Should Pay and Why It Varies

A family walked into our Basheer Bagh clinic last month with two quotations on their phone. One hospital had quoted Rs. 28,000 for cryobiopsy. Another had quoted Rs. 58,000. Both centres listed the same procedure. Neither had explained why the price was so different.

That gap is the reason this page exists. Cryobiopsy (a biopsy that freezes lung tissue using a thin probe passed through a bronchoscope) typically costs Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 60,000 in India. Where you land inside that range depends on five real clinical variables, not on which hospital has the glossiest brochure.

What Cryobiopsy Costs in India Today

Cryobiopsy in India costs roughly Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 60,000 per procedure. Most centres in Hyderabad sit in the lower-middle part of that range. Metro hospitals in Delhi and Mumbai sit at the upper end. This is the total professional and equipment charge for the procedure itself. It does not always include the room, anaesthetist, or pathology fees.

City tierTypical range (Rs.)
Tier 1 metro (Delhi, Mumbai)Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000
Hyderabad, Bengaluru, ChennaiRs. 25,000 to Rs. 45,000
Tier 2 citiesRs. 25,000 to Rs. 35,000

For a first-time reader, our what is cryobiopsy page covers the procedure in detail. The full clinical guide is on the cryobiopsy in Hyderabad page.

What Makes the Price Move

Five factors explain almost every quote difference we see in clinic. None of them are about hospital branding.

1

Anaesthesia type

Cryobiopsy under general anaesthesia in an OT costs more than the same procedure under deep sedation in a bronchoscopy suite. The drug bill, anaesthetist fee, and OT charge all add up.

2

Number of samples taken

Current guidance recommends three to five biopsy samples from different lung segments. Each freeze cycle uses a cryoprobe and a dedicated bronchial blocker. Centres that take fewer samples will charge less, but the diagnostic yield drops.

3

Cryoprobe equipment

Disposable single-use probes cost more than reusable probes. The newer 1.7 mm probes give better tissue cores but carry a higher consumable cost than older 2.4 mm probes.

4

ROSE availability

Some centres run rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), where a pathologist checks samples in real time. This adds a fee but reduces the chance of a non-diagnostic biopsy.

5

Hospital tier and overheads

Corporate hospital chains carry higher fixed overheads than focused specialist clinics. The same procedure can shift by Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 on this factor alone.

What the Package Usually Includes

Always ask for a written breakdown. A typical cryobiopsy package in India bundles some line items and bills others separately.

Usually included

  • Bronchoscopy suite or OT charge
  • Cryoprobe and bronchial blocker consumables
  • Bronchoscopist fee
  • Basic monitoring during the procedure

Usually billed separately

  • Anaesthetist fee (if general anaesthesia is used)
  • Histopathology fee for sample analysis
  • Pre-procedure tests (CT chest, PFT, coagulation profile)
  • Day-care or short admission charges
  • Medications during recovery

A Rs. 30,000 quote that excludes anaesthesia and pathology can become Rs. 50,000 once those bills arrive. A Rs. 50,000 quote that includes everything is often the cheaper option in practice. Always compare totals, not headline numbers.

How Cryobiopsy Cost Compares to Surgical Lung Biopsy

Surgical lung biopsy (VATS, or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) costs Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 2,50,000 in India. That is three to five times the cost of cryobiopsy.

FactorCryobiopsyVATS (surgical)
Cost in IndiaRs. 25,000 to Rs. 60,000Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 2,50,000
AnaesthesiaDeep sedation or GAGeneral anaesthesia with single-lung ventilation
Chest incisionNone (via bronchoscope)Two to three incisions
Chest drainNot usually requiredTwo to four days
Hospital staySame-day or overnightFour to seven days

For most patients with suspected ILD, current Indian and international guidance recommends cryobiopsy as the first-choice tissue diagnosis. VATS is reserved for cases where cryobiopsy is non-diagnostic or unsuitable. We cover this decision in detail in our cryobiopsy vs surgical lung biopsy comparison.

Insurance Coverage for Cryobiopsy in India

Most Indian corporate health insurance plans cover cryobiopsy. Coverage is not automatic. The way the procedure is coded on your claim form often decides whether it is approved.

In our experience, claims usually go through when cryobiopsy is listed under one of these heads:

  • Diagnostic bronchoscopy with biopsy
  • Transbronchial lung biopsy
  • Bronchoscopic procedures for lung disease

Most insurers ask for pre-authorisation. You will typically need the referring doctor’s note, your CT report, and a quotation from the centre. Pre-authorisation takes one to three working days at most TPAs.

Coverage and exclusions vary by policy. Confirm with your TPA before the procedure date.

Questions to Ask Any Centre Before You Book

A lower quote is sometimes a sign of fewer samples or older equipment. A higher quote is sometimes hospital overhead, not better care. Ask these questions to compare like with like.

1.

Is the price under general anaesthesia or sedation?

2.

How many biopsy samples will be taken?

3.

Is the histopathology fee included in the quote?

4.

Is the anaesthetist fee included?

5.

What is the size of cryoprobe used (1.7 mm or 2.4 mm)?

6.

Is ROSE available?

7.

Who is the operating bronchoscopist, and how many cryobiopsies have they performed?

The seventh question matters most. Cryobiopsy is a procedure where operator volume changes outcomes.

Why Cryobiopsy Is Ordered in the First Place

Most patients on this page are budgeting for a procedure that has already been recommended. The usual reason is suspected interstitial lung disease (ILD). The CT scan shows a pattern the radiologist cannot diagnose on imaging alone.

In that situation, the multidisciplinary team needs tissue. Cryobiopsy delivers a tissue diagnosis with far less risk than open surgery. For the full diagnostic pathway, see ILD diagnosis in Hyderabad.

“Cost is one variable in this decision. The other two are the centre’s bronchoscopy volume and the operator’s cryobiopsy experience. A clean quote at a low-volume centre is not the same value as a slightly higher quote at a busy centre. Volume changes outcomes.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does cryobiopsy cost in India?

Cryobiopsy in India typically costs Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 60,000. Hyderabad sits in the lower-middle part of that range. Final cost depends on anaesthesia type, number of samples, and what the package includes.

Is cryobiopsy covered by insurance in India?

Most Indian corporate health plans cover cryobiopsy, usually under bronchoscopy or diagnostic pulmonary procedures. Coverage is not automatic. You will usually need pre-authorisation with the doctor's note, CT report, and a quotation. Confirm with your TPA before the procedure date.

What is the cost of cryobiopsy in Hyderabad?

In Hyderabad, cryobiopsy is generally priced between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 45,000. The Rs. 20,000 spread reflects anaesthesia choice, sample count, and whether histopathology is bundled. Ask any centre for a written quotation before you decide.

Is cryobiopsy cheaper than surgical lung biopsy?

Yes. Surgical lung biopsy (VATS) in India costs Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 2,50,000. Cryobiopsy is roughly one-third to one-fifth of that cost. Cryobiopsy also avoids a chest incision and a multi-day hospital stay.

How many samples are taken during cryobiopsy?

Most centres take three to five samples from different lung segments. Taking fewer samples reduces cost but also reduces diagnostic yield. Ask any centre how many samples are included in their quote.

Is cryobiopsy done under general anaesthesia?

It can be done under general anaesthesia or under deep sedation, depending on the centre and the patient. General anaesthesia is more controlled but costs more. The choice should be made on clinical grounds, not price alone.
